The history of Chandeleur

The origins of Chandeleur can be traced back to ancient Rome, where it was celebrated as Lupercalia, a festival in honor of the god Lupercus, protector of flocks. With the advent of Christianity, this pagan celebration evolved into the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary, commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple of Jerusalem. It is during this ceremony that candles were blessed, hence the name "Chandeleur."
